JAV Holidays Day #27 – Studio Week: Soft On Demand

Today’s Studio Week post is about Soft On Demand (SOD for short), the Japanese AV patron saint of creativity. Much of the really unique stuff in JAV was either invented or popularized by SOD and its legendary founder, Ganari Takahashi. Takahashi left the company a few years ago and is no longer in the porn biz.

It’s really not correct to call SOD a studio, it’s actually collection of studios. At the highest level SOD is a big conglomerate, the first publicly listed AV company. They produce somewhere around 1000 titles per year. So what studios make up SOD? There are a lot… SOD, Deep’s, IEnergy, V&R, Hibino, Dogma, Cutie & Honey, Natural High, Dandy, Lady X Lady, and Sadistic Village to name a few. There are also a few studios that used to be part of SOD that have broken off on their own, like Wanz factory, Glay’z, and Aroma. Actually many of the studios that make up SOD claim some kind of independence from corporate SOD but I think that’s probably because SOD’s whole thing is they say major label porn sucks and the independents make the only stuff worth watching.

Anyway, Takahashi was a pretty controversial figure. Certainly during his years in the industry (1995-2005) he pioneered many of the things (like zenra, naked spots, sex quiz shows, penis study, Magic Mirror, etc) that made JAV what it is today. But on the other hand some see a little hypocrisy in his methods; he always advocated the independent studios while at the same time building an empire by rolling them up. He claimed to cater to the porn snobs (who want quality above all else) but relentless drove his costs downwards. Finally, during the last AV Open SOD was caught buying their own videos in an effort to win the sales competition. Although Takahashi had left SOD by then many people blamed him and the scandal almost caused the Open to collapse.
