MS Antivirus 2009 is has been around for a while but I just got it. Long story short, it is malware from hell. Use Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware from this link. Took about two hours to run but it worked. It's free.

Recently I've been experiencing problems with lots of Antivirus programs (which typically now also protect against spyware).
Thumbs down for Panda 2008 & 2009 (poor installation routine, caused my Internet connection to frequently stop responding and poor support). Thumbs down for System Suite 8 & 9 (problems with updating the virus signatures, poor support). Thumbs down for Norton 360 2.0 (weird internet connection problems and tons of problems experienced by others around the net). I'm actually having better luck with free Antivirus programs such as Avast and AVG.

I need to explain better:
MS Antivirus 2009 is the Name of the Malware. I got it from surfing Youtube tube sites. Since posting this I got it a second time. I have a current version of McAfee. Spybot and Ad-Aware would not remove it. Using System Restore would not solve the problem. You will know if you are infected with MS Antivirus 2009 because a pop-up trying to sell you the cure will come up about every 30 seconds. If your software takes care of it fine, if it doesn’t remember this post. |

I'm on Youtube a lot and even porn sites and I haven't picked that up. Do you use Firefox? It's one of the best browsers out there to prevent a lot of things like this. Also use the add-on Adblock Plus. I was told about this and I rarely get pop-ups anymore.

You may only use ONE Antivirus Program, but can use any number of the Anti Spyware programs.
Microsoft Antivirus 2008/2009 and now Microsoft 360 is doling the rounds. Haven't found how it gets into the systems; I've never got any of them. ![]() If it comes in - Ctrl-Alt-Delete and close the Pop-up. (Usually close the browner that way.) Don't click on anything - they created the pop-ups, so can make them install a program when you click "no." ![]() I ran a Malwarebytes scan in SAFE mode, but had to load the program from a Flash Drive (Downloaded from another PC) because MS 360 'Blocked the malwarebytes website - saying it was a known attack site! Crafty Devils! ![]() Never give them your credit card number - in any case. Personally - I like the Norton Antivirus 2009 (previous versions were systme hogs) and Kaspersky. McAfee is OK, but a bit of a resource hog. I have given up on the free programs (AVG, AVAST) as I have seen too many nasty things get in that can't be cured using them - where the Commercial progarms do MUCH better. ![]() And yes, I work on a lot of PCs for a living.

I believe the entire page including headers, footers; toolbars, etc. are a “single hotspot”. Clicking anywhere starts the downloading of the malware. Be suspicious when you drag your mouse pointer all over a YouTube type page and it stays on the “finger ‘ID’ing a link mode” whatever that’s called. I did get this type of page a third time but I was able somehow to close the browser before it completed the download. I think you will only have about three seconds to do this so you have to be fast. It’s good to know that Malwarebytes also gets rid of Microsoft 360. Kudos to Malwarebytes. |

I got infected by the Malware program “Spyware Protect 2009” yesterday. It has to be by the same folks that brought us MS Antivirus 2009 and the others mentioned by Bereft. It appears that they are getting nastier as time goes on. I have no clue how I picked this one up.
First you get the annoying pop-ups wanting you to buy the product. Your computer runs real slow. It took me about 60-90 seconds to save and close my open files. It also shuts down your ability to use the internet effectively not allowing you access to most sites. Fortunately “Malwarebytes” was on my computer and got rid of it, its freeware. If it was not on my computer I would not have been able to download it because “Spyware Project 2009” shut down that ability. All is not well with my computer however. The only browser that works now is Netscape. It appears that Firefox, Explorer and Google Chrome have all been damaged in the process. It looks like the malware has also removed all my restore points. This is not a good thing. I’m on the road so I’ll have to wait till I get home to have this looked at by professionals. I recommend that all have “Malwarebytes” on your computer. It’s free. I have been infected by these guys three times and thwarted two other attempts. These guys are just as bad as the Somali pirates and deserve the same, a head shot with a 30 cal. Last edited by ginko23; 04-15-2009 at 06:34 AM. Reason: spelling |

Right now I am using Webroot's Antivirus & Spyware protection on two of my systems. On two other systems I am using some free ones (AVG and Avira). I haven't gotten blasted with anything lately. I also have Computer Associates' Security Suite 2009 sitting here in the box as well that I picked up at Circuit City during the liquidation but I not tried it yet.

When I am doing some research on a particular subject I use primarily Google. You may get 100,000 hits. For most folks they find what they are looking for on the first or second page. I may actually get to that 100,000 hit if I’m desperate. Either from that Google hit or a link on some obscure site you will get the infected page displayed. What the creators of the malware have done is make the entire page a ”hot spot” so no matter where you click you will start downloading the malware.
I think that they concentrate on the porn related sites so the infectee's are less likely to seek outside assistance or complain. The first malware I talked about was disguised as a YouTube type page. If you recognize the page like I did the third time around, don’t click on anything just shut your browser down. I don’t know how I picked up “Spyware Project” but I was on CHAN sites quite a bit. |
