Synopsis

"The Stranger" is a couples oriented feature that was lensed about five years ago (May 1998).  The DVD version is new for 2003.     

Tina Tyler's character discovers that her husband, played by Colt Steele, is having an affair with Dakota.  She retains an attorney to handle the divorce, played by Hershel Savage.  Judging by their home, the couple seems pretty well off financially, and Mr. Savage keeps warning Tina that "things could get messy."  However, Tina shrugs off his concerns and cryptically says "she doubts it" without further explanation.  She's more concerned about "celebrating" with Hershel.  For his part, Colt and his buddy (Kyle Stone), pick up two girls at a party, Mila and Asian hottie Kobe Tai.  Of course, it isn't long before the guys get their rocks off with their new friends.  There's a surprising plot twist at the end that sort of brings it all together.

What's Hot

Fairly good acting in this feature, especially by Tina Tyler, Hershel Savage and Colt Steele.  Director Toni English seems to run a tight ship on the set and expects the performers to take the movie seriously.

Generous selection of bonus scenes, including three additional Kobe scenes from other features. 

Good production values, but the video quality is not as good as new Vivid releases. 

What's Not

Although Kobe Tai is featured on the boxcover and has two scenes in this feature, I didn't really feel like this was her vehicle.  The large majority of the story revolves around the husband (Colt) and wife (Tina), with attorney Savage getting a fair amount of face time also.  Kobe's part is essential to the story, but she has relatively little dialog here.  Plus, her girl/girl sex scene with Charlie is superfluous to the plot. 

The unexpected ending was pretty cool, but then I started thinking that this movie had the potential to be a great noir film with a more fleshed out script.  Too bad about the treatment the plot is given here.

As noted above, Steele did a good acting job here, but physically seems miscast.  He's a big buff guy with a ponytail and it seems weird for him to be walking around in suits.  Also, his size overwhelms a petite starlet like Kobe, especially in positions like doggy. 

Multiple angles pop up at various times.  Normally I like this feature, but in this case, the footage when multiple angles was available was very short.  By the time I found the button and the player switched views it was over.

In some scenes, it appears that two cameras were used.  However, one of the cameras we inferior to the primary one.  The footage shot with the secondary camera was grainy and the color did not match main one.  Although the problem is very noticeable, the footage is thankfully brief. 

Annoying commercials at the beginning of the disc that I could not bypass on my stand alone player.  The best I could manage is to fast forward past them.

Blow by Blow

Below is a brief blow by blow account of the sex scenes:  

Scene One -- Dakota & one guy (Colt Steele).  Dakota is a plump blond who reminds me a little bit of Anna Nicole Smith.  This is an indoor scene shot in the bedroom.  The sex includes a blowjob, titty fucking and finger fucking (2 digits) followed by missionary and doggy sex.  Colt pulls out and cums on her ass.

There are five bonus scenes on this disc:

Everything Else

The main menu of the dvd is attractive and well laid out.  Viewers are presented with the following choices:  Play Feature, Scene Selection, Positions Room (5 choice), Vivid Girl Extras, Bonus Rooms, Phone Sex (Ad), Web Site (Ad) and Setup (multiple angles).  The five bonus scenes are accessed under "Vivid Girl Extras".  A brief bio of Kobi is also shown. 

There are two "Bonus Rooms" here, "Behind the Scenes" and "Outtakes & Bloopers".  The running times are 6:30 and 1:20 respectively.  Perhaps these two should have been combined into one segment.  The content in each segment is very similar.  The majority of the footage is outtakes.

Two photo galleries are included (Kobe and Chasey Lain).  These are nicely done with music and roving camera.

Nice boxcover art and silkscreen on the dvd disc.

Condoms were used in all scenes.  

Last Word

"The Stranger" is recommended to Kobe Tai fans.  Even though she's not the main character in the feature presentation, this disc does include five Kobe scenes which is about ninety solid minutes featuring the Asian hottie.  Couples will probably enjoy this disc, and some may relate to the (crumbling) domestic relations and divorce themes.  The dialog is fairly realistic and the actors handle it well.  Sex-wise the action is typical for Vivid features.  A few standard boy/girl scenes, one girl/girl and an anal scene to shake things up a little.  Overall, it's not bad, but it had potential to be much more. 

Overall Rating:  C+ -> B- (DVD version bumped up for bonus scenes and extras)
